The German company Uniper was unable to cancel the decision of the Russian Court, which obliged it to pay the Russian gas monopolist Gazprom more than 14 billion euros.
Reuters writes about it.
“The German company continues controversy with its former main gas supplier – the Russian Gazprom, which initially limited, and subsequently suspended supplies and led Uniper to the bankruptcy limit, which forced the German government to interfere with the conflict, ”the publication reads. – “Among the other consequences of the conflict is the decision of the Russian court, which obliged UNIPER to pay Gazprom more than 14 billion euros, which the German company appealed on an appeal.”
On Tuesday, February 25, Uniper stated that she had exhausted all the available legal opportunities to cancel it, but to no avail.
Uniper has confirmed that the Russian decision would allow Gazprom to confiscate UNIPER assets in Russia and possibly beyond, adding that it intends to defend itself from any attempt to compulsory.
The court in St. Petersburg issued this decision in March 2024 in response to a claim for uniper on damages, filed with Swedish arbitration after Gazprom stopped delivery in 2022. All this eventually led to the nationalization of Uniper.
Uniper stated that he considers the decision of the Russian court to be a violation of international law and the principle of fair trial and filed an appeal in Russia.
As it was reported, Uniper on June 12, 2024 decided to terminate its long -term contracts for the supply of Russian gas, concluded with Russian Gazprom exports.
The decision was made possible after Stockholm arbitration granted Uniper on June 7, the right to terminate the contracts and awarded it more than 13 billion euros as compensation for gas volumes that did not supply gasprom exports from mid -2022.
Gazprom exports since June 2022 has supplied Uniper only limited gas volumes, and since the end of August 2022 stopped supply. However, long-term contracts between the two companies were still valid, and some of them would continue to operate until the mid-2030s.
In April 2023, Russia took control of their companies in the country from the Finnish energy giant Fortum Oyj and the German Uniper SE.
UNIPER previously recorded a loss of 4.4 billion euros from its Russian unit and stated that it no longer controls its activity. She also wanted to sell her daughter and in February stated that she had found a Russian buyer, but the agreement was blocked.
Düsseldorf Uniper with a headquarters in Dusseldorf is an international energy company that operates in more than 40 countries. Uniper activity covers electricity production in Europe and global energy trading. The company owns and manages gas storage facilities with a total capacity of more than 7 billion cubic meters.
