Law enforcement officers noted that “it was he who was responsible for the use of chemical weapons by Russian troops on the eastern and southern fronts against Ukrainian defenders.”
According to the investigation, “since the beginning of the full-scale aggression of the Russian Federation, more than 4,800 cases of the use of prohibited chemical ammunition by the occupiers, including K-1 grenades with CS and CN poisons, have been recorded.”
“Their use is prohibited by the Convention on the Prohibition of the Development, Production, Use of Chemical Weapons and Their Destruction dated January 13, 1993,” the SBU reported.
It added that “these chemicals affect the mucous membranes, eyes and respiratory tract, forcing the military to leave their positions under enemy fire.”
“For the most part, the occupiers use ammunition with poisonous substances in the form of drops from FPV drones on the defense points of Ukrainian defenders,” the Ukrainian agency explained.
The law enforcement officers also reported that “more than 2,000 wounded soldiers of the Armed Forces of Ukraine with chemical injuries were sent to hospitals and medical institutions of Ukraine.”
According to the SBU, “the occupiers drop ammunition from drones on the most tense areas, covering their actions with heavy artillery fire.”
It is known that the law enforcement officers documented the use of these munitions by the Russian Federation, handing over grenades and soil samples to the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW).
“After that, two independent laboratories of this organization confirmed the fact of the use of prohibited substances, which became the basis for suspecting Kirillov under the article on war crimes committed by prior conspiracy of persons (Part 2 of Article 28, Part 1 of Article 438 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine)” , the SBU reported.
It is reported that “currently, the investigation is ongoing to document new facts of violations of international humanitarian law.”
According to the command, the Russian army uses munitions such as K-51 and RG-VO, which are equipped with dangerous chemicals that are used to fight riots and are prohibited as means of warfare. Also, the military records a significant share of ammunition with dangerous chemical compounds of an unknown type.
“For October 2024, the units of radiation, chemical, biological intelligence of the Support Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine recorded 323 such cases,” the headquarters reports.
The Ukrainian military previously announced the use of chemicals by Russian troops on the battlefield. There were no reports of casualties as a result of their use, nor whether such use brought any success to the Russian forces.
Russian authorities reject accusations of using chlorpicrin and other chemicals against Ukraine. Moscow has repeatedly stated that Ukraine is preparing a provocation to accuse Russia of using chemical weapons at the front.
