The former president of Georgia and the head of the Odesa State Administration Mikheil Saakashvili is asking the president of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyi to grant him the status of a “civilian prisoner” in the Russian-Ukrainian war.

Details: Saakashvili says that the reason for the appeal to Zelenskyi was a recent one transfer from hospital to prisonwhere, he claims, he was poisoned in March 2022 “shortly after the start of a full-scale war.”

According to the ex-president of Georgia, his poisoning was arranged by Russia, and the current Georgian government “openly sided with Russia.” Therefore, in this context, “it is absolutely obvious that my persecution and my fate are connected with the war,” he believes.

“I want to ask you, just like in 2019, when you returned my illegally taken citizenship, please include me as the former head of the Odesa Regional State Administration, as the head of the Executive Committee of the National Reform Council, who is illegally held by the pro-Russian regime of Georgia, in the list of civilian prisoners of this war with the corresponding legal consequences,” Saakashvili wrote.

In Georgia, Mikheil Saakashvili was convicted of several cases, including embezzlement of state funds and illegal border crossing, to more than 12 years of imprisonment.

In November, the Prosecutor’s Office of Georgia initiated a criminal case against Saakashvili and seven other opposition leaders for allegedly calling for the overthrow of the government.

At the same time, the Georgian authorities want declare unconstitutional the ex-president’s party “United National Movement”.
