“In January 2025, Russian troops moved north to capture the villages of Neskuchne and Vremivka, the latter located directly west of the city. Velika Novosilka has been on the front line since the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Russia’s attempts to capture the city in the summer of 2022 failed, and Ukraine pushed Russian forces south in 2023,” said a statement released by the UK Ministry of Defence.
Russia’s advances on this axis come after it captured other cities in the east β notably Vugledar in October 2024 and Kurakhove in January 2025, the intelligence said.
Meanwhile, on January 19, the Khortytsia operational-strategic group of troops reported that Russian troops are trying to block Velika Novosilka.
“In the direction of Novopavlovsk, the enemy, taking advantage of difficult weather conditions, carried out offensive actions with the aim of blocking the settlement of Velyka Novosilka. To support offensive actions, the enemy actively used armored vehicles. As a result of fire, two tanks and five enemy armored vehicles were destroyed. Despite numerous losses in personnel, the enemy continues its assault on the outskirts of Velika Novosilka. Soldiers of the Defense Forces are fighting grueling defensive battles,” the message reads.
Velika Novosilka is the last relatively large outpost of the Defense Forces in the south of Donbas. Here, the Armed Forces of Ukraine recaptured some territories in the summer of 2023, and Russia began its assaults in response in the fall of 2024.
