Russian Military Casualties in Ukraine Conflict Reach Over 1.2 Million

As of March 22, 2023, the Ukrainian General Staff reported that approximately 1,287,880 Russian military personnel have been lost since the onset of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine. This figure includes 940 soldiers reported lost in the previous day alone.

According to the Ukrainian military, the losses encompass a significant amount of military equipment, including:

  • Tanks: 11,793 (+3 in the last day)
  • Armored fighting vehicles: 24,263 (+1)
  • Artillery systems: 38,638 (+30)
  • Multiple launch rocket systems (MLRS): 1,694 (+3)
  • Anti-aircraft systems: 1,336 (+3)
  • Aircraft: 435
  • Helicopters: 350
  • Operational-tactical level drones: 190,870 (+1,885)
  • Cruise missiles: 4,468
  • Ships/boats: 33
  • Submarines: 2
  • Vehicles and fuel tankers: 84,639 (+121)
  • Specialized equipment: 4,098 (+2)

The Russian government has not disclosed official casualty figures, with the last reported number of fatalities being 5,937 in September 2022.

Meanwhile, journalists from the Russian publication Mediazona, along with the BBC Russian Service and a team of volunteers, have identified the names of 204,626 Russian military personnel who have died in the conflict since February 2022. This list is not exhaustive, as information regarding all military casualties is not always publicly available.

Estimates of total Russian losses, including both wounded and killed, from international organizations and intelligence agencies are considerably higher. In December 2025, a NATO official, speaking on the condition of anonymity, indicated to the BBC Russian Service that the total number of killed and wounded in the Russian army could approach 1.15 million.

Ukrainian officials have also been cautious in disclosing their own casualty figures. President Volodymyr Zelensky has stated that information regarding Ukrainian losses will be released after the conflict concludes, although he has begun to provide updates approximately once a year. In an interview with France 2 in early February 2026, he mentioned that Ukraine has lost 55,000 soldiers since February 2022, in addition to a significant number of individuals classified as missing.

On January 13 of this year, Commander-in-Chief of the Ukrainian Armed Forces Oleksandr Syrskyi announced that the military had managed to reduce personnel losses by 13% in 2025, though he did not provide specific figures regarding Ukrainian casualties.

The Ukrainian General Staff reports that Russian military casualties have surpassed 1.2 million since the invasion began, with significant losses in personnel and equipment. Meanwhile, estimates from various organizations suggest that the true extent of casualties may be even higher.
