“Russia was not elected to the Council of the International Maritime Organization – the United Nations agency that deals with shipping safety.”, — write: www.pravda.com.ua
Source: Minister of Foreign Affairs Andriy Sybiga of Ukraine in the X social network, writes “Evropeyska Pravda”
Direct speech: “This is another defeat of the Russian Federation in the elections to the governing bodies of international organizations – after failures in UNESCO and the OPCW – which is an obvious continuation of its growing international isolation.”
Details: Sibiga emphasized: Russia is a terrorist state that systematically violates international law, attacks civilian ships, destroys port infrastructure and operates a shadow fleet, grossly violating security standards.
Therefore, according to the minister, it is logical that Moscow cannot be a member of the executive body of the International Maritime Organization.
“Today’s vote demonstrates that the international community does not tolerate illegal behavior at sea. It confirms that international law prevails,” Sibiga added.
The Assembly of the International Maritime Organization elected China, Greece, Italy, Japan, the United States, Norway, Panama, Liberia, South Korea and Great Britain as members of the Agency’s Council for 2026-2027.
Russia was one of the 11 candidate countries for membership in the Council in category “A” (countries with the greatest interest in providing international transportation services), and the only one of all was not elected to the council in 2023.
As they wrote, this year Russia was not elected for the third year in a row to the Executive Council of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), Ukraine was elected instead.
