Literally CSIS: “At current rates, the combined losses of Russia and Ukraine could reach 2 million by the spring of 2026.

After seizing the initiative in 2024, Russian forces advanced at an average rate of 15 to 70 meters per day in their most significant offensives, slower than almost any major offensive campaign in any war of the past century.”

Details: CSIS provides the following casualty figures: Since February 2022, Russian forces have suffered approximately 1.2 million casualties (killed, wounded, and missing) and up to 325,000 killed.

The center adds that “estimating losses and victims in wartime is difficult and inaccurate, and various parties have motives for overestimating or underestimating the figures for political reasons.”

Literally from a CSIS study: “In 2025 alone, Russian casualties totaled approximately 415,000, an average of nearly 35,000 casualties per month. 16 In addition, between February 2022 and December 2025, approximately 275,000 to 325,000 Russian servicemen died on the battlefield.”

Details: CSIS provides the following comparisons: “The Russian death toll on the battlefield in Ukraine is more than 17 times the Soviet death toll in Afghanistan in the 1980s, 11 times the death toll in the First and Second Chechen Wars in the 1990s and 2000s, respectively, and more than five times the death toll in all Russian and Soviet wars, taken together, since the Second World War”.

According to CSIS, Russian military casualties on the battlefield far outnumber Ukrainian military casualties — by a ratio of roughly 2.5:1 or 2:1.

“Ukrainian forces likely suffered between 500,000 and 600,000 casualties, including killed, wounded and missing, and between 100,000 and 140,000 killed between February 2022 and December 2025.

The combined losses of Russia and Ukraine may amount to 1.8 million and may reach 2 million total losses by the spring of 2026,” CSIS notes.

The Center calls the reason for Russia’s heavy losses a strategy “aimed at exhausting the enemy.”

However, CSIS notes that Ukrainian forces have suffered significant losses and losses due to the “defense in depth” strategy.
