“We strongly condemn the act of armed aggression of the United States against Venezuela in violation of all international legal norms,” Nebenzya said.
What preceded:
- Saturday morning in the capital of Venezuela, Caracas explosions rang outa state of emergency was introduced in the country due to “extremely serious military aggression carried out by the current government of the United States of America.”
- US President Donald Trump said his Venezuelan counterpart Nicolas Maduro and his wife were captured and taken out of the country as a result of a special operation, and the United States will govern Venezuela until a clear and safe transition of power takes place there.
- Media later reported that the plane carrying captured Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, had arrived at US Stewart Air Force Base in New York.
- The Constitutional Chamber of the Supreme Court of Venezuela decided that Vice President Delsey Rodríguez will perform the duties of the country’s president during Maduro’s absence.
- The European Union released its statement in which it indicated that it does not consider Nicolas Maduro to be the legitimately elected president of Venezuela and supports the fight against transnational organized crime and drug trafficking, but at the same time calls for these challenges to be resolved in full compliance with international law.
- The Russian Foreign Ministry condemned the armed aggression of the United States against Venezuela on January 3 and expressed deep concern.
