“I think we have a process that will lead us to a good outcome for everybody,” he told lawmakers on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

“Even at the moment when I am addressing you, there are technical meetings on this issue between us and our partners in Greenland and Denmark. I think we will achieve a positive result,” he said.

The Secretary of State emphasized that the negotiations will have a regular and professional character, but Washington seeks to avoid excessive publicity of this process.

“We will try to do it in such a way that these negotiations do not turn into a circus in the media, because we believe that this will give both sides more flexibility to achieve a positive result,” said the chief US diplomat.

“I think we’re going to get there,” Rubio added, echoing President Donald Trump’s promise that the US would not use force.

Prehistory:

  • Earlier on Wednesday, French President Emmanuel Macron called the dispute with the US over Greenland a “strategic wake-up call” for Europe.
  • During a visit to Paris, the Prime Minister of Denmark, Mette Frederiksen, stated that the world order as it was known until now is a thing of the past.
  • The Prime Minister of Greenland, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, during a speech at the Paris University of Sciences Po, said that there are red lines in the negotiations with the United States that cannot be crossed.
