Details: According to a survey commissioned by the think tank “European Council on Foreign Relations” (ECFR), in most of the countries where the survey took place, only 10-15% of citizens consider the US an ally.

Only in 3 of the 11 NATO countries where the survey was conducted, more than a quarter of the respondents see the US as an ally – these are Poland, Great Britain and Hungary.
It is noted that, compared to 2024, trust in the US as an ally has fallen everywhere in the countries where the research was conducted.
Moreover, in Denmark, which faced President Donald Trump’s claims on Greenland, the drop in trust is the largest – from 30% in 2024 to 15% in 2025.
In Ukraine, 18% of citizens consider the US an ally.
The study also found an increase in the number of those who refer to the US as a rival, adversary or enemy.
“Of the NATO countries where the survey was conducted, only in Poland and Estonia this group made up 9%. In the rest of the “allies” it is a double-digit number. In some places, there is even a double-digit number of those who classify the United States as an enemy of Europe,” the article says.
In particular, in Germany, France and Spain, 28% of people each called the USA a rival or adversary.
“Trump is now openly positioning the United States precisely as a rival of the remaining NATO states and as their potential adversary. And after Greenland, the attitude towards the States in Europe is clearly worse,” the article says.
ECFR conducted a study in November 2025 in 11 European NATO states – these are Great Britain, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Poland, Denmark, Estonia, Portugal, Hungary, Bulgaria, as well as in two states outside the Alliance – in Ukraine and Switzerland.
