Meta aims to reduce its dependence on Google and Microsoft, and to do so it is developing its own search engine to be used in its Meta AI chatbot.
Meta publicly showed off its web crawler technology this summer, saying it was designed to train artificial intelligence models or improve products. The company did not directly say that it was working on a search engine, but it has been indexing the Internet for at least eight months in order to integrate these developments into its Meta AI chatbot, writes The Information.
The move is a direct result of reliance on other big tech companies that have “hurt” the company in the past, such as Apple’s App Tracking Transparency (ATT). Meta previously said the iPhone’s privacy feature, introduced in 2021, will be worth more than $10 billion in ad revenue. CEO Mark Zuckerberg is believed to want Meta to be as autonomous as possible to avoid a repeat of this if Google or Microsoft cut off its access to web search. It is not known if Meta is currently paying any companies for this access.
NV Techno previously reported that Meta AI had over 185 million weekly active users and over 400 million monthly active users in August.
