On April 29, 1992, the Ukrainian national team played its first history match. Yuriy Shelepnytsky brought the sign match against Hungary in Uzhgorod with the captain’s bandage of blue and yellow.

– It is known that before the match, the players did not sing the national anthem because they did not know it. But then did you know the words of the anthem of Ukraine?
To be honest, I did not know all the words, but in memory since childhood the words were etched: “We will be in the soul and body for our freedom.” And when the anthem sounded, these words were sung inside. And all the text did not know perfectly.
– Then someone talked in locker rooms Ukrainian language or They were ashamed and crossed on Russian?
They did not speak Ukrainian at the time, all communication was Russian. Although Ukrainian -language players who were from the western regions were enough. But after the collapse of the USSR it was a reality, everyone communicated in Russian.
It would be strange if someone started talking Ukrainian. But Ivan Getz and I went to our native, because he is from Transcarpathia, I – from Bukovina. There were Ukrainian words spread among themselves.
– Or There were some Conflicts within teams? Or prevailed Friendly atmosphere?
There could be no conflict. They gathered people who performed in the Ukrainian Championship, so for various clubs: Dynamo Kyiv, Shakhtar, Chernomorets, Dnipro. But we knew each other from the youth teams. Therefore, the atmosphere was normal.
If you can design at this time, if it was possible to move in time, I do not know how such things would be perceived: communication in Russian, “East” and “West”. Then it would be possible, though, now, when there is a war, everyone realized that to speak Ukrainian is normal, ”Shelepnytsky said.
