“List 31”, investigation of Radio Liberty projects “Schemes” and “How are you?” about the abduction of children from the territories occupied by Russia, entered the final of the British journalistic competition of the Association of International Broadcasting (AIB). It became known on September 23.

The List 31 investigation entered the National Issues category, competing for the honor with seven other finalists including Britain’s Channel 4 and Belgium’s VRT.

“AIB recognizes the highest standards in journalism and reporting across platforms such as television, radio and online platforms. To be shortlisted is a significant achievement, as the applications for all our categories in 2024 are of an extremely high quality than ever before,” reads the announcement of the list of finalists of the competition.

In the “List 31” investigation, RFE/RL journalists established the identities of children who were illegally deported to Russia from the occupied territories of the Donetsk region, traced the route by which they were deported, and named the organizers responsible for it.

Two Radio Liberty podcasts also made it to the finals of the competition.

Among them: a Radio Farda (Iranian Service) podcast about leading Iranian athletes whose dreams were destroyed by gender discrimination, which intensified after the 1979 revolution and the establishment of the Islamic Republic; and the video podcast “Archipelag Belag” (Belarus Service), which talks about human rights violations by the regime of the Belarusian authoritarian ruler Alexander Lukashenko.

The announcement and awarding of the winners of the AIB competition will take place on November 22 in London.

In 2022, RFE/RL received an AIB award in the category of “continuous news coverage (television and video)” for reporting on the Russian war in Ukraine. The members of the jury paid attention to the work of the network of correspondents of Radio Liberty and the TV channel “Nastoyaschee vremya”, created by Radio Liberty in Ukraine with the participation of “Voice of America”.

In the category of hot news (television and video) of 2022, CNN International won for its coverage of events in Ukraine. In the long audio category, there is an edition of BВC Sounds with a podcast about the Ukraincast-100 days war. In the category of specialized factual TV/video – Al Jazeera’s investigative editorial with material on political processes in the USA.

In 2023, the final of the AIB competition also included the investigative film “Scheme”, dedicated to the memory of Radio Liberty producer and journalist Vira Gyrych, who died on April 28, 2022 in Kyiv as a result of a Russian rocket hitting the apartment building in which she lived.

The Association of International Broadcasters (AIB) is a non-governmental organization that recognizes television, radio and online broadcasters for professional journalism. AIB’s secretariat is located in Great Britain.
