Against the background of the growing trade confrontation between the US and China, recycling batteries becomes a strategically important task.

Gizmodo writes about it.

In response to the introduction of high duties by Washington, China announced the ban on the export of a number of rare earth metals, which threatened the stability of the supply of key materials for the US industry. In these circumstances, Redwood Materials, founded by JB Straubel, is one of Tesla co -founders, – he acts on a closed production cycle. By agreement with Lime, the provider of common mobility services, Redwood will process old batteries from scooters and bicycles, turning them into raw materials for new batteries.

These measures not only reduce the dependence on Chinese deliveries, but also step to form a closed, ecologically stable supply chain. Unlike past recycling attempts, which were often unprofitable, high prices for rare earth metals make this approach commercially appropriate. In addition, Redwood technology allows you to return up to 98% of valuable components back to production, providing high quality of finished products.

In 2024, the company processed materials of 20 gigawatts, which is enough to produce a quarter of a million electric vehicles. Given the scale of imports and the old batteries accumulated in the US, such an initiative can be the key to overcoming the raw material deficit. For Lime, this agreement is not only a way to reduce the cost of recycling transport, but also to confirm the status of sustainable and environmental service.

The new reality, formed by the tariff war, changes much for American technological startups.
