Details: The Paris Agreement is an international pact aimed at limiting global warming by reducing greenhouse gas emissions. This is the second attempt by the Trump administration to withdraw the United States from the Paris Agreement. The first took place in 2017, but was canceled by Joe Biden on the first day of his presidency in 2021.
According to the procedure, the US will have to wait a year for an official withdrawal.
The White House has declared a “national energy emergency,” outlining a series of changes aimed at rolling back US climate regulations and boosting oil and gas production. The decision comes after a historic increase in global temperatures, which in 2024 exceeded the +1.5°C mark for the first time, compared to pre-industrial levels.
Although the Paris Agreement is not legally binding, it is a key document that encourages global cooperation to combat the causes of global warming.
The US will now join Iran, Yemen and Libya as one of the few countries to remain outside the deal signed 10 years ago in the French capital.
The White House also announced a number of changes, including the rollback of the Biden administration’s climate initiatives: cuts to clean energy investments, elimination of incentives for electric vehicles, and expansion of oil and gas production.
“We’re going to drill, baby, drill,” Trump said. In his inaugural speech, he also emphasized that the US will usher in a new era of oil and gas exploration.
Trump’s direct speech: “We will lower prices, refill our strategic reserves to the very top, and export American energy around the world. We will become a rich nation again, and this liquid gold under our feet will help us do that.”
Details: “Ignoring the $2 trillion global clean energy boom will only enrich competitors while the consequences of climate disasters continue to destroy lives and economies,” said UN climate chief Simon Still.
For reference: The Paris Climate Agreement was signed in 2015 to jointly combat the risks of climate change. Its goal is to keep the global average temperature increase below 2°C from pre-industrial levels, and ideally below 1.5°C.
The US is responsible for approximately 15% of global greenhouse gas emissions.”
