“But there is a very important nuance: we must be sure that the situation where the conflict page is closed in the territory of Azerbaijan, but turns into new claims to the territory of Armenia,” Pashinyan emphasized.
He noted that some Azerbaijani circles call about 60% of the sovereign territory of Armenia “Western Azerbaijan”, which, he said, is a territorial claim to Armenia.
“Our approach is to sign a peace agreement and at the same time dissolve these mechanisms. I think we should try to implement all this by the end of this year,” the Armenian Prime Minister said.
Pashinyan also said that Armenia was ready to quickly continue negotiations with Azerbaijan to sign and ratify the agreement.
Prehistory:
- Azerbaijan and Armenia were actually in a state of war after declaring independence more than 30 years ago, and in 2020 and 2023, Azerbaijan returned control over Nagorny Karabakh as a result of hostilities.
- In March, Armenia and Azerbaijan announced the approval of the text of the peace treaty. But after that Baku put forward a number of requirements, including changes to the Armenian Constitution before signing the document.
