Polish President Advocates for Nuclear Project Participation

The President of Poland, Karol Nawrocki, has expressed strong support for the country’s involvement in a nuclear project, emphasizing the need to adhere to international regulations in this endeavor. His comments were made during an interview with Polsat News.

Nawrocki highlighted the importance of Warsaw advancing towards its own nuclear capabilities. He stated,

“I am a strong supporter of Poland joining the nuclear project. I mean that the path to creating Polish nuclear potential, while fully respecting all international norms, is the direction we should follow,”

he said.

When questioned about how this could be achieved without violating the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, Nawrocki admitted he was uncertain but insisted that preparations should begin.

“We need to act in this direction so that we can start working. We are a country located directly next to an armed conflict. The aggressive, imperial attitude of the Russian Federation towards Poland is well known. I cannot say when this will happen, or if it will happen,”

he added.

In response to inquiries regarding potential reactions from Moscow if Poland were to initiate its nuclear program, Nawrocki remarked,

“Russia may react aggressively to anything.”

Previously, Bloomberg reported that a group of European nations has begun discussions on establishing their own nuclear deterrents, citing a decline in confidence regarding the reliability of the United States as an ally. Currently, only France and the United Kingdom possess nuclear weapons among European countries.

The Polish government has repeatedly stated its willingness to host American nuclear weapons on its territory. Former President Andrzej Duda proposed this in the spring of 2025, urging the U.S. to relocate nuclear warheads to Poland as a deterrent against potential aggression from Russia.

Additionally, during a national address last spring, French President Emmanuel Macron announced his decision to initiate strategic discussions with EU leaders regarding the use of French nuclear weapons for the defense of the European continent.

Polish President Karol Nawrocki has voiced support for Poland's participation in a nuclear project, stressing adherence to international norms. His remarks come amid broader discussions among European nations about nuclear deterrence in light of shifting geopolitical dynamics.
