“During the inspection of the scene of the incident, the investigative and operational team, explosives experts and police canine experts discovered the remains of the projectile. The operatives identified the sender of the parcel – a 40-year-old resident of the city of Ternopil. Law enforcement officers, together with customs officials, discovered another explosive parcel with exhausted ammunition in the sorting center.
Kyiv police in cooperation with Ternopil police detained a 40-year-old man at his place of residence in accordance with Article 208 of the Criminal Procedure Code of Ukraine. During the search of his apartment, another dozen ammunitions were seized,” the message reads.
According to the investigation, the man made souvenirs from ammunition, engraved them, and sent them through the mail.
Investigators of the Kyiv police have started criminal proceedings under part 1 of Art. 263 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine – illegal handling of weapons, ammunition or explosives. The sanction of the article provides imprisonment for a term of up to seven years.
There are currently no comments from the detainee or his defense.
The parcel exploded in Kyiv during customs control, the State Customs Service reported on October 30. The agency clarifies that this happened at the “Ukrposhta” customs post of the Kyiv Customs during the control of international postal items that were registered for export from Ukraine. An unknown object, which was an attachment in the package, broke. The injured are two customs employees and three Ukrposhta employees.
