Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said on Wednesday that he wants to launch a “naval police” program to secure the Baltic Sea from Russian threats. Tusk announced this initiative after the alleged sabotage of an underwater telecommunications cable last week. About this UNN reports with reference to Politico.

Speaking to reporters in Warsaw on the eve of a summit of Nordic and Baltic leaders in Sweden, Tusk said the initiative would be “a joint venture of countries located on the Baltic Sea, which equally feel threatened by Russia.”

“If Europe is united, then Russia is a technological, financial and economic dwarf in relation to Europe,” he added. “But if Europe is divided, then Russia poses a threat to each European country separately.”

Addition

On November 18, it was reported that the C-Lion1 telecommunication cable between Helsinki and Rostock stopped working.

Sweden is currently investigating the damage to two data cables in the Baltic Sea, looking into the involvement of the Chinese vessel Yi Peng 3. Germany considers the incident an act of hybrid warfare.

Moscow, which has ramped up its hybrid warfare campaign in Europe since a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in early 2022, has called suggestions that Russia had something to do with the downed cables “ridiculous.” Beijing also denies involvement.

For reference

Nine countries – Sweden, Denmark, Russia, Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Germany and Poland – border the Baltic Sea. The Russian Navy is based in St. Petersburg and Kaliningrad.
