German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius has decided not to run for the post of federal chancellor in the upcoming special elections. The Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) had earlier urged him to run for office. This is reported by Reuters, writes UNN.

As the publication notes, special elections in Germany are to be held on February 23. And in mid-November, it became known that the party of the current chancellor, Olaf Scholz, SPD, was considering the option of running for this position of Pistorius, who is more popular than the current head of the federal government.

At the same time, the ruling Social Democratic Party of the Federal Republic of Germany is already lagging behind in the polls, and is in third place after the opposition conservatives and the far-right.

On November 21, Pistorius announced that he would not run in the upcoming elections.
