Pig Transplantation: Clinical Tests Start in the United States

Transplantation of pig organs: In the USA, FDA clinical trials have approved two biotechnological companies with clinical trials on genetically modified pig transplantation. The first tests will begin with six patients with renal failure in mid -2024.”, – WRITE ON: Unn.ua

The US Product and Drug Control Office (FDA) has issued two biotechnological companies for clinical trials on genetically modified pig transplantation for patients with renal insufficiency.

About it reports The Washington Post, writes UNN.

Details

Achievements in the field of xenotransplantation – organ transplants from one species to another – are gaining momentum, since scientists develop methods of editing genes that make organs less prone to rejection.

So far, such transplants have been approved within the FDA program, which allows the use of the studied medicines outside clinical trials only when patients are in critical condition and have no more options.

Some medical experts are afraid of ethical and medical aspects of such transplants, including the risk of infection of diseases that are characteristic of animals that spread among humans, as well as how to help patients effectively weigh unknown risks.

United Therapeutics Corporation said on Tuesday that its test will begin with six patients with terminal renal failure approximately in the middle of this year. UNITED Therapeutics participants should be 55 to 70 years old and are on dialysis for at least six months.

Patients will be supervised within at least 12 weeks after surgery, and an independent audit will be performed before deciding to expand the study.

The idea of using pig organs in humans is not new – one of the first registered cases was 1838, when the doctor transplanted the cornea of the pig in the person in an unsuccessful attempt to correct his vision. Pigs are more widespread than some primates, and their organs are more like human, according to medical experts.

A woman with Alabama last month became the most long -lived recipient of transplanting the pork organ. Luna Luni, 53 years old, received a pork kidney with 10 gene edits in November, designed to reduce the risk of organ rejection.

The first recipient, Richard Sleiman, a 62-year-old Massachusetts Department of Transport, lived 52 days after the procedure last year.

Lisa was spoken, a 54-year-old grandmother, received a pork kidney and a heart pump on different days last April. She lived for 86 days, although the kidney, which gradually refused, had to be removed in 47 days.

Luna sacrificed her mother’s kidney a few decades ago, and then her renal failure developed due to complications during pregnancy. It has been on dialysis of the kidneys for almost eight years, during which it developed a very high level of antibodies, abnormally attached to the attack of another human kidney, which made it unlikely that it would ever receive a donor organ.

Our goal is to increase the availability of transplant organs to offer a therapeutic alternative to lifelong dialysis

Recall

53-year-old Luna lives with a pork kidney for 61 days after experimental transplantation. The patient who previously donated the mother’s kidney could not receive the human organ because of the high level of antibodies.
