Toyota Motor Corporation again confirmed its leadership in the world automobile market, taking first in terms of sales in 2024.
This is the fifth consecutive year when the Japanese auto giant holds the palm of the championship, ahead of its closest competitor – the German concern Volkswagen Group.
Despite the decline in total sales by 3.7% compared to the previous year, Toyota was able to sell 10.8 million cars, including Lexus and Hino Trucks. Volkswagen Group, in turn, sold 9.03 million cars, which is 2.3% less than in 2023.
The success of Toyota is largely due to high sales of hybrid cars. In 2024, the company sold more than 4.2 million hybrids, which is much higher than the previous years and demonstrates a huge jump compared to electric vehicles.
It should be noted that Toyota also increased the sales of electric vehicles by almost 40% compared to 2023, reaching the mark of almost 140,000 units. Volkswagen, which actively develops the direction of electric vehicles, showed an increase in sales in China by 8%, but faced 30% in the US.
Despite the fact that neither Toyota nor Volkswagen is still afraid of competition from the Chinese car manufacturer by BYD, which sold 4.3 million cars in 2024, the growth of this company is of some concern. BYD demonstrated a striking growth of sales by 41% compared to 2023, with a large part of this volume are electric vehicles (1.8 million units).
Thus, Toyota continues to retain leadership in the world automobile market, but competition from other manufacturers, especially Chinese, is increasing every year.
