This is evidenced by the authors’ calculations researchpublished in the scientific journal Pediatrics, writes Associated Press.
A peanut allergy occurs when the body’s immune system mistakenly identifies its proteins as harmful. It releases chemicals that cause complex symptoms – hives, shortness of breath, and even anaphylaxis.
For decades, doctors recommended delaying the introduction of peanuts into the diet until age 3. But in 2015, Gideon Luck from King’s College London published the results of a pioneering study. Together with his colleagues, he found that introducing peanut products into the diet of infants reduces the risk of allergies by more than 80%.
In 2021, scientists published updated recommendations. According to them, peanuts and other major food allergens should be introduced between 4 and 6 months of age without prior screening or testing.
In a new study, researchers analyzed the electronic medical records of US children to track food allergy diagnoses before, during, and after the study was published.
Surveys have shown that only about 29% of pediatricians and 65% of allergists in the country follow the recommendations of scientists. The reason is uncertainty about the best way to introduce peanuts into the diet early.
Despite this, scientists saw positive dynamics. Thus, peanut allergy in children under the age of 3 has decreased by 27% since 2015, and by 40% since 2017 (when the recommendations were expanded).
In total, about 60,000 children were able to avoid it in 10 years.
We will remind, earlier scientists discoveredthat adults with severe peanut allergies can safely reduce their sensitivity to the allergen by consuming small doses of this product daily.
