A team of researchers, led by scientists from the Cambrida University, develops a new type of brain implant for the treatment of Parkinson’s disease, consisting of small clusters of brain cells.

Parkinson’s disease is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder caused by the destruction and death of neurons in the brain, especially those produced by dopamine. Reduced dopamine levels disrupts normal brain activity, affecting motor control and causing problems with movement. Scientists do not know what provokes the disease, and there is no medication against it yet, but the future experiment gives hope more than 10 million people living with this disorder for possible treatment, according to a statement in the Cambridge University.

Researchers seek to develop a new type of brain implant from small brain cell clusters for the treatment of Parkinson’s disease. Scientists have long studied cellular replacement therapy as a potential treatment that replaces the dead dopamine cells new, but so far, scientists have not been able to fully integrate transplanted cells with the nervous system of patients.

The new team hopes to solve this problem by developing transplants from the middle brain organoids. After transplanting, they want to use advanced materials and electrical stimulation to maintain the connection of transplanted cells with the nervous system and restore lost nerve pathways.

“Our ultimate goal is to create accurate treatments that can restore the normal functioning of the brain in people with Parkinson’s disease,” said George Mallias from the University of Cambridge, who, together with a Cambridge’s colleague with Cambridge, will manage the project.

It is hoped that in a few years, or even months, researchers will report the success of the first animal tests.
