Scientists have come to the conclusion that regular use of fish can have a significant impact on children’s behavior.
According to the study, children who eat fish twice a week demonstrate a higher level of friendliness and sociability, while those who avoid seafood are more likely to show selfishness.
The study at Bristol University included the analysis of data from almost 6,000 children aged seven to nine. It turned out that children who consume at least 190 grams of fish a week are less likely to face behavioral problems. Among the seven -year, the likelihood of delays in those who do not eat fish was higher by 35 percent, and in nine -year this figure increased to 43 percent.
Scientists say that seafood is rich in omega-3 fatty acids, selenium and iodine, which play a key role in brain development. However, there was no connection between fish consumption and the level of intelligence. Despite the obvious benefit, most children do not get enough fish in the diet. Researchers associate this with the fears of parents about pollutants contained in seafood.
The UK National Health Service recommends that you include at least two portions of fish a week in the diet, including one portion of fatty fish. However, due to the possible accumulation of harmful substances, boys are advised to use no more than four servings of fatty fish a week, and girls – no more than two.
Dr. Caroline Taylor, one of the authors of the study, emphasizes that parents should look at children’s nutrition to provide them with optimal conditions for development. Scientists hope that their work will help to raise awareness and improve the quality of baby food.
