Scientists have made an amazing discovery. Using data from the Chandra X-ray Observatory and other telescopes, astronomers have created a stunning image of the star cluster NGC 2264, which is shaped like a Christmas tree.
NGC 2264 is located in our Milky Way galaxy about 2,500 light-years from Earth. The stars in this cluster are very young – their age is only one to five million years. For comparison, the age of our Sun is about 5 billion years.
In the new image, the stars of the cluster glow in bright colors, and the gas clouds between them are colored green. Such a color scheme creates an incredibly beautiful and festive picture.
This is not the only space discovery associated with the New Year holidays. NASA scientists also presented an image of the star cluster NGC 602, which is located in the Small Magellanic Cloud. This cluster resembles a Christmas wreath decorated with bright stars.
Data from the James Webb Space Telescope was used to create this image. X-ray data showed young stars in red, and infrared data showed dust clouds in orange, yellow, green and blue.
