“November 19 marks 1,000 days since the start of Russia’s full-scale war against Ukraine. These historical events are connected by the brutality and ruthlessness of the aggressor who seeks to destroy the Ukrainian people. We must remind the world of the terrible crimes committed by the communist Stalinist regime against the Ukrainian people in the 20th century, just as its successor, the racist regime of Putin, is once again committing genocide on Ukrainian soil,” the message reads.
As part of the campaign, the SCU calls on the Ukrainian community in the world and friends of Ukraine to jointly organize events dedicated to honoring the memory of the Holodomor victims and to condemn Russia for an “unprovoked genocidal war.”
In addition, those willing to join the campaign are encouraged to contact the governments of the countries. “Send appeal letters to the governments of your countries with the demand to recognize the Holodomor as genocide of the Ukrainian people. Call on the governments to condemn the current aggression of the Russian Federation against Ukraine as genocide of the Ukrainian people. Contact the governments to hold official commemorations of the victims or parliamentary hearings on the anniversary of the Holodomor-genocide,” the message reads.
The Memorial Day of the victims of the Holodomor-genocide of 1932-1933 is celebrated every year on the fourth Saturday of November, this year on November 23.
After the start of the full-scale invasion of the Russian Federation, consideration of the question of recognizing the Holodomor of 1932-1933 as a genocide of the Ukrainian people intensified in a number of countries, and parliaments around the world began to recognize the Holodomor as a genocide of the Ukrainian people.
On December 15, 2022, the European Parliament supported the resolution recognizing the Holodomor of 1932-1933 as genocide of the Ukrainian people. MEPs also called on Russia, as the legal successor of the USSR, to apologize for the actions of the Soviet regime against Ukraine.
The artificial famine arranged by the Soviet authorities in 1932–1933 in Ukraine is known as the Holodomor. In November 2006, the Verkhovna Rada recognized it as genocide of the Ukrainian people.
Ukraine, referring to the data of the scientific and demographic examination, claims that the total number of human losses from the Holodomor-genocide of 1932-33 is almost 4 million people, and the losses of Ukrainians in the part of the unborn amount to more than 6 million.
