Russian President Vladimir Putin decided to introduce a state of emergency at the so-called “federal” (i.e. state-wide) level due to the fuel oil spill after the tanker accident in the Kerch Strait. This was announced on December 26 by the head of the occupation Serhii Aksyonov. Earlier, on December 25, the Governor of the Krasnodar Territory, Veniamin Kondratiev, announced a state of emergency at the regional level.

Aksyonov also announced that funds will be allocated from the federal budget to eliminate the consequences of the spill.

Prior to that, since December 17, the state of emergency at the municipal level was in effect in Anapa and Temryuk district. On December 21, after oil products reached the shores of the occupied Crimea, a state of emergency was introduced in Kerch as well.

In Anapa and Temryuk district, cleaning is ongoing on a 54-kilometer section, and 190 kilometers of coastline are in the monitoring zone. About four thousand rescuers and volunteers are involved in the work.

According to data as of December 25, people collected almost 30,000 tons of contaminated sand, of which 23,500 tons have already been removed from the beaches.

The Ministry of Environment of Ukraine recently published an assessment according to which, from December 25, due to a change in the synoptic situation, oil products may begin to move in a northwesterly direction. Because of this, fuel oil can potentially reach the southern coast of the occupied Crimea.

Two Volgoneft fuel oil tankers crashed in the Kerch Strait on December 15, according to the main version, it happened due to a storm. The international environmental organization Greenpeace noted that if oil products from tankers (about eight thousand tons) spill, it could become one of the biggest man-made disasters in the Black Sea. Criminal cases have been initiated in connection with the tanker disaster.
