Details: The decision to nominate Olaf Scholz was made after German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius announced his refusal to participate in the race for the post of chancellor. SPD co-chairman Lars Klingbeil emphasized that the party is united in supporting the current leader.
“We want to go to the next election campaign with Olaf Scholz,” Klingbeil said.
Details: Pistorius said he would campaign for Scholz during the election campaign, and called the discussions surrounding the chancellor candidacy harmful to the Social Democratic Party.
“We have an outstanding federal chancellor in the person of Olaf Scholz,” who embodies “intelligence and prudence, which is of particular importance in today’s world,” Pistorius added.
Prehistory:
- Germany’s current chancellor, Olaf Scholz, has said he is seeking to become the Social Democrats’ candidate for chancellor again in early elections due to be held in February.
- But in recent days, more and more party members opposed Scholz leading the party to the elections as a chancellor candidate. Defense Minister Boris Pistorius was named as the preferred candidate by many social democrats.
- 64-year-old Pistorius has been the most popular politician in Germany for several months. At the same time, he has said before that he has no ambitions to become the head of the German government.
