Oil Prices Surge Past $100 Amid U.S.-Israel Operations Against Iran

Oil prices have exceeded $100 per barrel for the first time since the onset of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. This increase follows military operations by the United States and Israel targeting Iran, resulting in an 18% rise in U.S. oil futures and a 16% increase in the global benchmark, Brent crude.

Market analysts attribute the rising prices to concerns that the conflict in Iran may lead to prolonged supply disruptions. The ongoing violence has extended to other Middle Eastern nations, impacting oil refineries in the region.

Iran has issued threats to attack any tanker traversing the Strait of Hormuz, a critical maritime route responsible for transporting 20% of the world’s oil.

As of March 8, U.S. oil futures briefly reached $110 per barrel, while Brent crude prices climbed to approximately $108. Analyst Homayoun Falakshahi from Kpler indicated that prices could escalate to $150 by the end of March if shipping through the Strait does not resume.

Former U.S. President Donald Trump characterized the price increase as a minor cost for national security. He stated, “Short-term oil prices, which will quickly fall when the nuclear threat from Iran is eliminated, are a very small price for safety and peace for the U.S. and the world,” via his platform Truth Social.

In response to the escalating tensions, the Trump administration announced a plan to insure tankers operating in the Strait of Hormuz after marine insurers withdrew coverage for vessels in the area. The White House also expressed intentions to establish a military escort for these tankers, although specific plans remain unannounced.

Military Operations Against Iran

On February 28, Israel conducted strikes in Tehran, prompting President Trump to declare that U.S. forces had initiated a “major combat operation” against Iran aimed at neutralizing imminent threats posed by the Iranian regime. He accused the Iranian government of funding and training militants in Syria, Lebanon, Iraq, and Palestine.

The operation’s objectives include dismantling Iran’s missile industry and naval capabilities to prevent global destabilization.

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has claimed responsibility for launching missiles and drones toward Israel and attacking U.S. military bases in Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates.

In light of the military actions, French President Emmanuel Macron has called for an urgent meeting of the United Nations Security Council. The European Union reiterated its commitment to maintaining regional security and stability in the Middle East.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has suggested that the Iranian people deserve an opportunity to rid themselves of a “terrorist regime” to ensure safety for all nations affected by Iranian aggression.

On March 1, the IRGC announced the commencement of what it termed the “most destructive offensive operation in the history of the Islamic Republic” against Israel and U.S. military installations. Trump responded by urging the Iranian regime to abandon these plans and warned of a “very strong blow” in retaliation.

On March 2, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that the next phase of military operations against Iran would be even more devastating.

On March 6, Trump called for a complete change in Iran’s leadership, indicating he had several candidates in mind for a potential “good leader.” On March 8, Iran’s Assembly of Experts elected Mojtaba Khamenei, the son of the late Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, as the third Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic.

The surge in oil prices past $100 per barrel is linked to military operations by the U.S. and Israel against Iran, raising concerns over supply disruptions. The geopolitical tensions have prompted responses from various leaders and analysts regarding the potential for further price increases.
