Oil Prices Surge Past $100 Amid Iranian Conflict

On Sunday, March 8, oil prices surged above $100 per barrel for the first time since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, driven by escalating military actions in Iran.

Futures for U.S. crude oil jumped by 14.7%, reflecting traders’ concerns over potential long-term disruptions in global oil supply due to the ongoing conflict. Brent crude, the international benchmark for oil prices, rose by 12.63%, reaching $104 per barrel by 6:06 PM Eastern Time.

The spike in oil prices has also impacted stock markets, with U.S. indices experiencing sharp declines amid fears of renewed inflation. The Dow Jones futures plummeted by over 850 points, while technology-heavy indices like the S&P 500 and Nasdaq fell approximately 1.7%.

The rise in oil prices has already affected fuel costs. Following initial strikes in Iran on February 28, the average price of gasoline in the U.S. climbed to $3.45 per gallon by Sunday.

In a post on his social media platform, former President Donald Trump commented on the situation, referring to the increase in oil prices as “a very small price.” He stated, “Short-term oil prices, which will quickly drop once the nuclear threat from Iran is eliminated, are a very small price for safety and peace in the U.S. and the world. Only fools can think otherwise.”

Prior to this, on March 8, representatives from the Trump administration defended the decision to temporarily lift certain sanctions on Russian oil, predicting that the sharp rise in gasoline prices due to the Iranian conflict would last only a few weeks.

Oil prices have exceeded $100 per barrel for the first time since the Ukraine invasion, driven by conflict in Iran. This surge has led to significant declines in U.S. stock markets and rising fuel costs.
