Odesa Mayor Gennadiy Trukhanov stated that he does not have and never had Russian citizenship. In his opinion, such statements were made for “political purposes”, according to his video, which he shared on his social networks.

“I passed all the checks of all possible law enforcement agencies. According to the questions made by the law enforcement officers, they received appropriate answers that I do not have and never had Russian citizenship,” he said.

Trukhanov also called those who “shake society” as “enemies of the country”.

Today, September 17, volunteer and blogger Serhii Sternenko, citing his own sources, wrote that Gennadiy Trukhanov has Russian citizenship and issued a Russian bank card on the eve of a full-scale invasion – February 9, 2022. He noted that he kept this data from “merged Russian bases.”

Ukrainian journalists have repeatedly written that the mayor of Odesa probably has Russian citizenship. In 2016, the Odesa Department of the Security Service of Ukraine was unable to find out whether Gennadiy Trukhanov had a Russian passport.

In 2018, Sternenko was attacked three times in Odesa, during the last of them he fatally wounded one of the attackers, Ivan Kuznetsov. The second participant in the attack, Andriy Isaikul, later fled Ukraine. The activist claimed that he acted in legal self-defense. He accused the mayor of Odesa, Gennady Trukhanov, of ordering the attacks, who does not comment on the case.
