Billionaire and close adviser to President-elect Donald Trump Elon Musk met with Iran’s ambassador to the United Nations, Amir Saeed Iravani, to “defuse tensions” between Iran and the United States.

Details: According to the publication’s sources, the meeting between Musk and Iravani lasted more than an hour in a secret location.

Iranian officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity, described the talks as “positive” and “good news.”

The publication notes that the first meeting between a high-ranking Iranian official and Musk raises the possibility of a change in the tone of relations between Tehran and Washington under the Trump administration, despite the tense history of relations between the newly elected president and Iran.

However, Trump’s team called this meeting “private” and refused to comment. And Musk did not respond to the publication’s request.

We will remind: U.S. intelligence agencies received intelligence that Iran was preparing an assassination attempt on Donald Trump, prompting the U.S. Secret Service to tighten security measures around the former president in recent weeks.

It has also been reported that Trump plans to significantly tighten sanctions against Iran and cut its oil revenue in order to undermine Tehran’s support for groups in the Middle East and its nuclear program.

Prehistory:

  • In August 2018, US President Donald Trump signed a decree reimposing sanctions against Iran.
  • Already in January 2020, Donald Trump announced that his administration would introduce new sanctions against Iran in response to its destabilizing behavior.
  • January 9, 2020, that the United States has increased sanctions against Iran after a missile attack on bases in Iraq where American military personnel are stationed.
  • The Biden administration deliberately implemented softer energy sanctions against Russia, Iran and Venezuela to keep fuel prices down before the election.
