Nvidia modifies Chip H20 for China to bypass US export restrictions – Reuters

NVIDIA plans to release a simplified version of Chip H20 for China in the next two months due to export restrictions introduced by the United States. The original H20 version, which was the most powerful for China, was blocked after the US government stated that a license was required to sell it, Reuters writes.

The modified version of the chip, which is planned to be released in July, has reduced specifications, including less memory. However, customers will be able to adjust Chip performance.

This step is part of the NVIDIA strategy to maintain its presence in an important Chinese market, despite US export restrictions that have been introduced through possible chip military use. Nvidia has already informed its major Chinese clients, including cloud services, about the planned release of the updated version of Chip.

Last month, CEO nvidia Jensen Juang visited Beijing and emphasized China’s importance for the company. China is 13% of NVIDIA total sales, which makes this market strategically important. Since 2022, the United States has restricted the exports of the most modern china to China, and after October 2023, when export rules were reinforced, NVIDIA introduced the H20.

Chinese technological giants, such as Tencent, Alibaba and Bytedance, actively ordered H20 chips because of increasing demand for available Shi models, which creates additional difficulties for NVIDIA with restrictions.
