Our surgeons of the department of microvascular, plastic and reconstructive surgery, led by the head Yevgeny Volodymyrovych Simulyk, performed a unique operation – restored the palate of a military serviceman who suffered from a mine-explosive skull injury while on duty. A metal fragment flew through the cheek and severely damaged the upper jaw, so a large defect of the hard palate appeared. For a long time, the man could not eat normally or even breathe. As a multidisciplinary team together with maxillofacial surgeons, our colleagues performed a high-tech operation – a vascularized fragment of the scapula was transplanted to close the defect of the hard palate

Vasyl Zhuk was injured at the beginning of this year. For more than half a year, the fighter waited for a vital operation, went to various hospitals, but the doctors did not give comforting forecasts. The capital’s doctors took a risk and operated on the fighter.
The patient received a mine-explosive injury – a complex injury to the facial skull. A metal fragment flew through the cheek and damaged the upper jaw, thus the patient was hospitalized with a hard palate effect

The fighter says: the medics patched up all the scars, except for one. A skull injury remained. During an enemy mortar attack, the man lost part of his palate, for a long time he could not eat or even breathe normally. The surgeons of several hospitals refused the operation: the case is too complicated.
The patient came to us more recently after the injury, initially it is the connection of the oral cavity with the maxillary sinuses, this is a significant problem that interferes with everyday life
The doctors of the Shalimov Institute say that such operations were never performed in Ukraine before. And they themselves consulted for a long time. Nevertheless, they dared to carry out an extremely difficult intervention.
The surgeons worked for almost 6 hours – transplanted tissue from the patient’s back to the palate area.
At least, according to our data, we did not find any information earlier that similar operations were carried out in Ukraine, such operations are carried out in the world. Of course, these are isolated cases. This is a high-tech operation and we performed it as a multidisciplinary team with our colleagues – maxillofacial surgeons. We had to take a vascularized fragment of the scapula, that is, a part of the scapula on the feeding vessels on the feeding vein, and we implanted this fragment. We connected to the facial artery, facial artery and vein, and thus started his blood flow
Another operation awaits the defender. It is necessary to establish full-fledged breathing, and also to insert dental implants. However, the fighter says: the somewhat forgotten feeling of a full-fledged living person is already returning to him.
