New names are chosen for the regions of Donetsk, Makiivka and Horlivka

The Donetsk regional state administration is conducting a survey on the new names of the districts of Donetsk, Makiivka and Horlivka – in general pit is proposed to choose new names for 12 districts.

Details: New names are recommended by historiansum and local historianthey are pits reproduce name historical localities and significant geographical objects of these cities. The survey of citizens will last until February 7.

According to the legislation, names associated with communism must be renamed by the end of February this year. The authorities emphasize that renaming does not require financial costs and people will not need to change their place of registration – all documents with old names will remain valid.

• Budyonniv district – on Bogoduhivskyi;
• Voroshilovsky – on Yuzivskyi;
• Kalininsky – on Kalynivskyi;
• Kirovsky – on Rutchenkovskyi;
• Kuibyshevsky – on Smolyaninivskyi;
• Leninsky – on Oleksandrivskyi;
• Petrovsky – on Voznesensky;
• Proletarian – on Chumakivskyi;

• Kirovsky – in Georgian;
• Soviet – on Khanzhonkivskyi;
• Red Guard – on Berestovsky;

Gorlovka

• Kalininsky district – on Kindrativskyi.

For reference: The legislation obliges ODE bring the names of districts in cities into compliance with the requirements of Ukrainian legislation by February 28, 2026.

According to the Ukrainian Institute of National Remembrance, three cities of the Donetsk region have the symbols of the communist totalitarian regime in the names of districts in the cities (12 districts) and are subject to mandatory renaming.

The law does not provide for the possibility of keeping names in honor of communist figures and phenomena, so it is suggested to decide on proposals for new district names.
