The Ukrainian polarists have enlightened the unusual subantarctic penguin near the Academic Vernadsky station. He has almost no white stripes on the nape of the neck, which are decisive for the species.

About it reported at the National Antarctic Scientific Center.

Subantarctic penguins are the most common view of the Galindes Island. In the season, their number can reach 7 thousand.

White stripes on the temples and nape are one of the markers of this species. However, they have almost absent in the penguin.

According to the polarists, atypical color is explained by the excess melanin in the feathers. It is a natural dark pigment that is produced in humans and animals. It is responsible for skin color, hair, feathers and iris.

Melanism (or excessive accumulation of melanin) is a genetically caused phenomenon opposite to albinism. It can be observed under normal conditions in many species, even if they are typical of a different color.

Polarists point out that this penguin is healthy and lively.

NACCs recall that in 2014 even completely black penguin was observed.

However, this phenomenon is very rare among these birds, so they are even devoted to separate scientific articles.

We will remind, recently near “Vernadsky” Born The first seals this year. The kids were born almost simultaneously.
