The head of NATO’s military committee, the Dutchman Rob Bauer, believes that the risk of Russia using nuclear weapons deters Western countries from involving their own troops to help Ukraine in the war.

Details: Bauer was asked whether the time had come to expand aid to Ukraine, hinting at the physical presence of certain Western allied forces.

“Fighting in Afghanistan is not the same as fighting the Russians in Ukraine. The Taliban did not have nuclear weapons. The Russians have them. But again, I’m not saying it’s “impossible”. However, we as an Alliance see this risk, and a political discussion is needed (…): are we ready for such a risk?”, the admiral said.

He continued that now that Ukraine has already received almost the entire range of weapons, up to the F-16, it is logical to ask questions about why decisions about this took so long, but at the beginning the leaders really hesitated where the Kremlin’s “red lines” were.

“It’s always easy to look back and say those fears were silly. But if you’re responsible for whether or not to take the risk, that’s a different conversation…

I am absolutely convinced that if Russia did not have nuclear weapons, we would already be in Ukraine to get them out of there. But they have nuclear weapons. So it’s not the same as Afghanistan,” said Rob Bauer.

It will be recalled that Bauer is finishing his work in his position, he will be replaced by the Italian Admiral Giuseppe Cavo Dragone.

In the spring of this year, French President Emmanuel Macron said that allies should not rule out the possibility of sending Western troops into Ukraine in order to create “strategic uncertainty” for Russia.
