NASA will accelerate the construction of a nuclear reactor on the moon – Politico

Yevgeny Demkivsky Author of news Mezha.media and GIK. I write about technologies, cinema and games. Perhaps about games with a little more passion.

NASA Daffy Temporary Administrator will announce accelerated plans for the construction of a nuclear reactor this week. This will be the first major decision of the former FOX News leader as the Space Agency Head, Politico reports.

According to the new directive, NASA plans to invite industry proposals to create a 100-kilowatt nuclear reactor with a launch by 2030. It is a significant acceleration compared to previous plans for a 40-kilon reactor ready for launch in the early 2030s.

“It’s about winning the second space race,” said NASA anonymous employee.

The solution is related to competition with China, which plans to plant the first astronaut for a month at about the same time. The directive states that the first country with the reactor on the moon will “declare a limited access zone, which will significantly limit the US opportunity.”

The initiative coincides with the focus of Trump administration on piloted flights. The White House offered a budget that increases the financing of manner astronautics for 2026, even despite almost 50% of the reduction in scientific missions.

In addition to the reactor on the moon, Duffy also issued a directive on the accelerated replacement of the international space station by commercial counterparts by 2030. NASA plans to conclude contracts with at least two companies within six months after the proposal.

The agency should appoint the project manager and receive feedback from the industry for 60 days. The initiative means that NASA will continue the development of nuclear technologies even after the pentagon of a joint nuclear missile engines program.
