NABU and SAP gave Zelensky’s initiative to ensure their independence

NABU and SAP gave the initiative of President Vladimir Zelensky to prepare a bill aimed at strengthening the law and order system, ensuring the independence of anti -corruption institutions.

Details: There is convinced that the preservation of the independence of detectives and prosecutors “are key conditions for effective investigation of corruption crimes and the fulfillment of international obligations of Ukraine.”

What preceded:

• The SBU and OGP staff conducted approximately 80 searches for 19 employees of the National Anti -Corruption Bureau in different regions of Ukraine on July 21.
• The next day, the Verkhovna Rada adopted Law No. 12414 as amended to the Criminal Procedure Code, according to which NABU and SAPs become dependent on the decisions of the Prosecutor General. On the evening of July 22, Zelensky signed the document.
• In many cities of Ukraine, protests have taken place after this legislative initiative was adopted.
• Zelensky gathered all the heads of law enforcement and anti -corruption bodies and assured that everyone agreed to work “exclusively constructively”.
• During the meeting initiated by the Presidential Office, the heads of anti -corruption institutions – NABU and SAP – stressed that the legislative changes adopted on the eve of the day before, they substantially restrict their independence, but assured that they would continue to work on maintaining the professional capacity of both institutions.
