Most teenagers in the US communicate with AI but still prefer people – research

About 75% of American teenagers have at least once turned to chatbots like Character.ai, Replika or Chai for communication, flirting or discussing personal topics. This is evidenced by a new Common Sense Media study.

More than half of the respondents use such digital tools regularly – several times a month or more. It is about Shi companions-virtual interlocutors, with whom you can rewrite or talk at any time, not about educational or generative systems.

By the way, Ilona Mask XAI has recently implemented animated 3D-avatars to communicate on iOS. Ilon Musk also announced that the company is working on a special version of chatbot for children.

Although most teenagers still consider communicating with real people more valuable, about a third admit that they have discussed serious topics with AI, not with friends at least once. The same number of respondents considers dialogues with AI no less satisfactory than with people.

Researchers say that teenagers spend an average of more than 8.5 hours a day behind screens, and the appearance of Shi companions can affect the development of social skills, critical thinking and emotional stability.

A quarter of teenagers confessed that they were shared with chatting personal information – name or geolocation. And a third felt discomfort due to certain phrases or AI during conversation. Despite the age restrictions, many services are available from 13 years, and age checks are easy to get around.

Common Sense Media advises to refrain from using such services to persons under 18 years of age, given the potential damage and the risk of addiction.
