The US Department of Justice said on Wednesday it had discovered more than a million documents potentially related to the Jeffrey Epstein case and that it could take “several weeks” to review and release them.

Details: The department released this information, noting that the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York and the FBI notified the department of the new documents.

“Our lawyers are working around the clock to review the documents and make the necessary legal corrections to protect the victims, and we will release the documents as soon as possible. Due to the volume of materials, this process may take several more weeks. The Department will continue to fully comply with federal law and President Trump’s instructions regarding the release of documents,” the US Department of Justice said in a post.

It is not known exactly how the new documents were discovered, and what they might contain.

CNN notes that Wednesday’s announcement comes after a week of periodic disclosures, as required by a new transparency law passed by Congress last month. The ministry has already come under fire for not releasing everything as required on Dec. 19, although officials insisted they needed time to redact the information to protect victims and reduce other potential legal challenges.

Even before Wednesday’s release of information about possible new documents, the US Department of Justice tried to make public everything it had at its disposal. The leadership of the US Ministry of Justice turned to the prosecutors of South Florida with a request for help in editing the documents.

The American agency made the “Epstein files” public in stages.

Literally from the publication: “A bipartisan group of lawmakers and a growing number of victims of Epstein’s abuse are criticizing the Trump administration for releasing the documents. Some question the harsh and seemingly haphazard redactions that shield Epstein’s associates from scrutiny. Others express outrage over the lack of redactions of materials revealing information about victims.”

Details: According to CNN, there is also growing frustration in the White House over the handling of the files, as the gradual release of the information continues a story Trump has long refused to discuss, and the administration’s position has shifted dramatically in recent days.

The publication recalls that recently released documents showed that federal prosecutors collected evidence in 2020 that Trump flew on Epstein’s private jet on several occasions in the 1990s, and that the Justice Department filed a lawsuit against Trump’s Mar-a-Lago club before the trial of Epstein associate Ghislaine Maxwell in 2021.

What came before: The US Department of Justice announced that a photo of US President Donald Trump, removed from the published “Epstein files”, has been returned to the online database.

Prehistory:

  • The bill, which requires the US Department of Justice to make public all the materials of the investigation into the late billionaire Jeffrey Epstein, has been approved by the US Congress.
  • Trump announced that he had signed a bill requiring the Department of Justice to release all of its files related to the Jeffrey Epstein case.
  • We will remind: in 2019, Epstein committed suicide in a prison cell while awaiting trial on charges of sex trafficking of minors.
  • In recent months, Epstein’s case has gained special political weight in the United States, when evidence of a possible close relationship between the deceased and Donald Trump, which he publicly denies, appeared.
