Direct speech: “During the entire time of the full-scale invasion and restrictions on travel outside of Ukraine for male citizens of Ukraine – starting from February 2022, unfortunately, we recorded more than 70 deaths during attempts to illegally cross the state border.
Advertising:
People, unfortunately, took such reckless steps, trying to cross the border through difficult-to-reach mountain areas or river sections, and lost their lives.”
Details: According to the spokesman, the most tragic incidents occurred on the river sections of the border.
Demchenko noted that the peak of deaths was recorded in 2023 and 2024. At the same time, in 2025, the number of deaths decreased significantly – we are talking about isolated cases.
What preceded:
- Since the introduction of martial law in Ukraine, travel restrictions have been in effect for men aged 18 to 60.
- The Tisza River in Transcarpathia remains the most dangerous area for illegal crossing. As of the end of 2024, border guards reported the discovery of the bodies of about 50 drowned people in the Tisza.
- The DPSU has repeatedly emphasized that the organizers of illegal schemes take thousands of dollars from evaders, but do not guarantee safety, often sending people through rapid mountain rivers without proper equipment.
