On Monday, January 20, US President Donald Trump pardoned almost all those accused of participating in the storming of the Capitol on January 6, 2021.
This is reported by Reuters.
It said the act effectively removed legal consequences for all but 14 of the nearly 1,590 people charged in connection with the assault. Exceptions are members of the far-right organizations Proud Boys and Oath Keepers, whose prison terms ended early.
Trump also instructed the US attorney general to close all cases related to the riots.
“These people were destroyed… What they did to these people is outrageous,” Trump said.
A statement from the White House called the investigation into the riot “a serious national injustice” and said that a pardon would begin “process of national reconciliation”.
A representative of the Bureau of Prisons told the publication that some prisoners serving sentences related to the events of January 6 may be released as early as January 20.
Among those pardoned is Enrique Tarrio, the former leader of the Proud Boys, who was sentenced to 22 years in prison for conspiracy to incite sedition, the longest sentence of anyone prosecuted in connection with the riots. Tarrio was found guilty of conspiring to violently oppose the transfer of power after the 2020 elections. Others pardoned include people convicted of using pipes, batons and chemical sprays to attack police officers guarding the Capitol.
So. as Reuters notes, Trump ended what officials called the largest investigation in the history of the Justice Department. The FBI and federal prosecutors have spent the past four years tracking down and indicting people they say were involved in a violent attempt to stop the transition of power after Trump lost the 2020 election.
Storming of the Capitol by Trump supporters on January 6, 2021 – what is known
On January 6, 2021, the US Congress convened to confirm the victory of Democrat Joe Biden in the presidential election. However, the meeting had to be interrupted because supporters of Donald Trump broke into the Congress building.
Shortly before, during or immediately after the storming of the Capitol, five people died, and more than 100 police officers were injured.
After the storming, a joint meeting of the two chambers of Congress resumed in the Capitol, at which the results of the presidential election and Biden’s victory were officially approved.
On January 13, the House of Representatives passed a resolution of impeachment against Trump. The case was referred to the Senate, which within a month found him not guilty of inciting the storming of the Capitol. 10 votes were not enough for impeachment.
According to media reports, in early August 2021, four police officers who confronted the invaders of the Capitol committed suicide.
According to the data of the US Ministry of Justice, within 32 months after the storming of the Capitol, 1,146 people were detained, 657 of them pleaded guilty and entered into agreements with the investigation. The courts had time to issue 623 verdicts — two defendants were fully acquitted, 41 partially acquitted, and 378 people were sentenced to imprisonment.
