More than 10 explosions rang out in Sumy at night, due to the Russian attack the city had problems with electricity and water supply, local correspondent Alyona Yatsina told Radio Svoboda (Svoboda.Morning project) about the consequences of Russian shelling of Sumy Oblast.

According to her, two large electrical substations are on fire in the city.

“I drove around the city, several traffic lights are working. There is no electricity, there is no communication either. Water is supplied somewhere up to the 5th floor more or less normally, but with reduced pressure. Trolleybuses do not run. As far as is known, no one was injured. There are several country houses that are damaged, and, in fact, objects of critical infrastructure in Sumy,” she said.

Regarding the city of Konotop, which was also attacked by Russian forces half an hour earlier than Sumy, there is a hit on the meat processing plant where there was a fire, the correspondent says.

According to her, Konotop is also without electricity and communication.

“At the same time, the authorities declare that shelling has decreased and civilians are suffering less. However, in August, with the beginning of the Kursk operation, we broke sad “records” in terms of the number of shelling. In August alone, 100 local people were injured as a result of these attacks. The city of Glukhiv and Yampil (Shostkinsky district), which used to be conditionally peaceful cities, were not affected, now they are simply being erased from the face of the earth. The streets are being wiped out with KABs (crushed aviation missiles – ed.),” the correspondent said.

Late in the evening of September 16, the Russian military, using UAVs of the “Shakhed” type, struck the Sumy region – the city of Konotop and the regional center, the regional military administration reported. According to local authorities, air defense forces shot down 16 Shaheds over Sumy Oblast.

Subsequently, the OVA reported that Russian drones attacked energy system facilities in Sumy Oblast at night. According to the local authorities, settlements of the Konotop, Okhtyr and Sumy districts were affected by the mass attack of the Russian Federation.

The Sumyoblenergo company reported that due to the Russian airstrike, power was cut off to consumers in Sumy, the network of the Sumy, Konotop, and Okhtyr districts of electricity grids, as well as the Bilopolska, Burynska, Lebedynska, Putivlska, Trostyanetska, Krasnopilska, and V. Pysarivska districts. As of 7:00 a.m. on September 17, 281,072 electricity consumers in the Sumy region remained without electricity.

Acting mayor Artem Kobzar informed that due to Russian strikes on Sumy, water is supplied to the city with reduced pressure, and there are problems with electricity supply. According to him, there were no injured or dead as a result of the attack.

The leadership of Russia denies that the Russian army during a full-scale war inflicts targeted strikes on the civilian infrastructure of the cities and villages of Ukraine, killing the civilian population and destroying hospitals, schools, kindergartens, energy and water supply facilities.

The Ukrainian authorities and international organizations qualify these strikes as war crimes by the Russian Federation and emphasize that they are purposeful in nature.
