Details: According to the decision of the government commission of Moldova, the electricity restrictions apply to consumption from 07:00 to 11:00 and from 18:00 to 23:00.
Among other things, in public and commercial buildings, interior lighting must be reduced by at least 30% and turned off when the premises are empty.
Additionally, during peak hours in Moldova, escalators will be suspended and window lighting, decorative, architectural and advertising lighting will be turned off, with the exception of sign lighting during non-working hours.
Savings measures also apply to water supply and sewage companies: they must adjust the mode of operation of storage tank pumps to minimize electricity consumption during peak hours.
Moldova’s central and local authorities should assess opportunities and take measures to reduce electricity consumption, especially during peak hours, “without compromising the safety, health of citizens or the functioning of essential services,” the decision said.
What preceded:
- Since December 16, a state of emergency in the energy sector has been in effect in Moldova, which will last 60 days. The government took such a step due to the uncertainty with the supply of Russian gas after the cessation of transit through Ukraine from January 1, 2025.
- The Moldovan government has admitted that the most vulnerable categories of residents will be deported from Transnistria if the worst-case scenario of the energy crisis comes true and the region is left without Russian gas.
