The Fraunhofer Institute presented a technology that allows you to convert household plastic waste into threads suitable for aditative production.
This development is aimed at reducing waste and increasing the share of recycled materials in industry.
The volume of plastic waste in Germany has reached a record indicators, and only a small part is processed. Specialists from the Institute of Production Technology and Modern Fraunhofer’s materials have found a way to solve this problem. In collaboration with Bremen Higher School, they developed a method of cleaning, sorting and processing plastic, which allows to obtain high quality polypropylene.
94% in just a few hours. Scientists have created an unusual but effective way to process plastic
The processing process involves grinding plastic, careful cleaning and removal of impurities. The material then passes through an industrial extruder, where it is heated and converted to threads suitable for 3D printers. The components obtained are highly durable and resistant to loads, which makes them suitable for use in the aviation and automotive industry.

Researchers continue to improve the technology, adding special components to the material that increase its performance. This project emphasizes the importance of a circular economy and stimulates the demand for recycled materials, which is especially relevant in the context of climate change and the need for efficient use of resources.
