Lebanon’s parliament voted Thursday to elect army chief Joseph Aoun as head of state, filling a presidential vacuum that has lasted more than two years.
The vote comes weeks after a ceasefire agreement halted the 14-month conflict between Israel and the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah, and Lebanon’s leaders appealed for international aid to rebuild.
Aoun promises to disarm militias; he also noted that “the state will have a monopoly” on weapons.
The main objective of the army’s deployment in southern Lebanon, as planned, will be to ensure that no non-state entity possesses weapons in the region.

Aoun also promised to rebuild areas destroyed by Israel’s recent airstrikes on the country. But he also promised to develop a defense strategy to contain Israel.
