“
Yevgeny Demkivskyi Mezha.Media news writer and geek. I write about technology, movies and games. Maybe about games with a little more passion.
According to Jacob Andreu, Microsoft’s AI vice president of product and development, Mico is designed to make interacting with Copilot more natural: “Technology takes a back seat – you’re just talking to a cute glowing object and building a bond with it.”
Mico is currently only available in the US, animations are activated by default in Copilot voice mode. The assistant uses an updated memory system that allows it to remember facts about the user and his work.
Microsoft is also adding a Learn Live mode that turns Mico into an interactive tutor. In this mode, it helps you understand learning topics using visual cues and a virtual whiteboard, a feature aimed at students and language learners.
The launch of Mico is part of Microsoft’s strategy aimed at forming its own “personality” Copilot. Previously, Microsoft AI CEO Mustafa Suleiman stated that the assistant will have a permanent identity and even a “virtual room”.
Mico also accompanies Microsoft’s new ad campaign promoting Windows 11 as a “talking computer.” The company hopes that Mico will help users interact more naturally with AI, although it faces a non-trivial task – to convince people that talking to a computer is not strange.
According to Andreu, Mico has an Easter card dedicated to Clippy: if you touch the character very quickly, you can see a special reaction – a kind of “hello” from the past.
By the way, earlier Microsoft introduced the experimental function Copilot Portraits, which allows users to choose animated human faces for Copilot.
