Meta introduced a bracelet that reads muscle signals to control devices without touches

Yevgeny Demkivsky Author of news Mezha.media and GIK. I write about technologies, cinema and games. Perhaps about games with a little more passion.

Meta has published a study in Nature, which described in detail the new version of its SEMG-RD bracelet. The device reads the electrical signals of the muscles (electromyography) from the surface of the skin and translates them into digital commands – for example, to navigate the desktop of a computer, movement of the cursor or opening programs. Gizmodo writes about it.

The last prototype is able to automatically adapt to a new user without long -term training, which could not be previously used. This was made possible by the new neural network algorithms that quickly analyze signals and create a personalized control model.

The developers also demonstrated the possibility of recognizing the strength of gestures – for example, how strongly the object is compressed. This reveals the potential for more complex interactions in VR- and AR-environments. In addition, the device can already read the writing of the text with a speed of 20.9 words per minute.

Meta has been working on similar interfaces since 2021. The current version of the bracelet is one of the most promising developments of the company in the field of alternative management methods that do not require cameras or physical controllers. The solution can also be useful for users with disabilities.
